Dag Hammarskjöld, 1905-1961

Being born in a family who was used to influence contemporary society, he began to seek his own way already as a young man. By making choices outside the expected development route for himself, he prepared to influence the world at an even higher level. His uninterrupted search for truth and honesty, for justice and respect for others were, and still is an example for us.

On his desk he had a bird in ceramics. The truth bird. If he sensed, or thought that the person he talked to did not speak the truth, he silently turned the bird so that its beak faced the caller. His example of commitment to truth and honesty should make us all want to avoid having the bird turning its towards us.

Dag Hammarskjöld’s example is extensive. We are honored to see him in PAAM’s Hall of Fame.
